Today I received a copy of a picture of John Payne Dotson in his Civil War uniform. He served as a Colonel in the 32nd Infantry Company K and later in the Calvary Battalion Company F of the Army of Tennessee. I’ve taken the photo and tried to clean it up some. Here are my latest night sky pictures. I took these December 10, 2009. The brightest with the star streaks was about a 30 minute exposure. The rest were around 15 second exposures with varying apertures and iso settings.

I completed my first ever time lapse video with my web cam today. It didn’t turn out too bad, though you can really tell I have it on the inside looking through a window and screen.
I setup this webcam to upload an image once a minute to my linux machine. Once I had all the images, I ran the script below. It takes all the images generated and names them sequentially.
ls *.jpg | nl -nrz -w4 | while read a b; do mv "$b" $a.jpg; done
Once you have all the image files named correctly, you can run ffmpeg. I’ve included my sittings here.
ffmpeg -r 10 -b 2048k -bt 768k -i %04d.jpg out.mp4
Equipment/Software:
Today, we took a minor excursion to Fall Creek Falls to see the leaves changing. It was the first time that I’d been up to that area. Overall, everything was timed about right ending with the sunset photos, you see near the top of the picture list below. Continue reading →
