I spotted an uncommon sight in Estill Springs Saturday, a Bald Eagle. This is the second time I’ve seen one locally. The last time was a few years ago. Both instances have been around the lake while the Eagle was apparently hunting. I have heard about a local nest and I want to check it out. This photo was taken at the Estill Springs City Park. The tree it is sitting in overlooks the bend in the Elk River.

Since I was stuck in a shelter without a camera during the storms, I found a good collection of slideshows with good photos at a Nashville TV site.
I snapped these pictures of the severe storms today. We were under a tornado warning for a little while. I don’t know if one ever formed though.

I received this picture from another descendant of John Payne Dotson last week. I was very glad to receive such a piece of family history since I don’t have any pictures that far back. This picture was taken either late 1800s or very early 1900s since John Payne, pictured sitting right, died in 1910. I am a descendant of Archabald Lefftridge Dotson and Martha Rebecca Baker. Archabald is the son of John Payne Dotson and Martha Crownover. I’m in the process of seeing if I can clean it up any.

Back row: left to right William Zachariah, John Spencer, Rufus Solomon, Joseph Madison, Goel Franklin, Archabald Lefftridge.
Front row: Nancy Almeta, Martha Rebecca Baker (Wife of Archabald), Sara Jane, Samantha Jane, Martha Crownover Dotson and John Payne Dotson
I know there is also some pictures of John Payne Dotson in his civil war uniform. I’d really appreciate scans if you have anything of John Payne, Archabald, or Zackariah (John’s father). You can send them to dotsonfamilytreetn@gmail.com.
Don’t forget, Comet Lulin is supposedly visible to the naked eye tonight (Monday). Check the link below at Sky and Telescope for a map of the comet for the whole month. If in need, download Stellarium to findout exactly where to look.
On Monday night February 23, in a moonless sky and near its peak brightness, Comet Lulin passes 2° south-southwest of Saturn.
Lulin’s closest approach to Earth, 0.41 a.u. (61 million km), occurs on Tuesday February 24th, when the comet may be at a peak of magnitude 5.0. By now it’s high up by late evening.

I took these photos with my Canon A720 IS last night up in Sewanee. I also broke out an old Canon AE-1 SLR and took some pics with it before and after dark. Its my first time using it so we’ll have to see how they turn out. Of course, they won’t be back from developing until Saturday afternoon.
I watched a pretty interesting video over at Make Magazine this morning about Kite Photography. It really looks interesting and tempting. I’ve embedded the video below.
